Metro Kids Give Up Halloween Candy For Troops Overseas

Now that trick or treating is over, some kids cashed in their hard work.

Their candy was put up for sale, and the buyers were local dentists who said they are sending the sweets overseas.

The great candy exchange of 2014 ended for all the little ghosts, goblins and sharks,

But on Saturday, trick-or-treaters were swimming in cash and orthodontist Dr. Marlo Miller was the one saying thank you.

Dr. Miller was just one orthodontist, among many in the teeth business, including dentists, who were literally taking candy from babies.

Every pound Dr. Miller collected was worth a dollar, up to five pounds.

When done collecting and sorting, Dr. Miller said he ships the barrels to California and from there, overseas to military troops with a thank you letter attached.

"I'm sure it's just you know a little piece of home," said Yukon orthodontist Dr. Marlo Miller.

And while the cause was tasty, Dr. Miller wanted to offer something even sweeter.

"The more the merrier kind of," said Dr. Miller. "Last year we collected 137 lbs. total.”

In her fifth year of participation, Dr. Miller's office offered a bouncy house, exotic animals, which you were encouraged to touch, and also a cupcake truck.

"You know the kids, anything that makes them smile is fun for us," said Dr. Miller.

Because the hope was the candy will make the troops smile, at least half as much as one of the kids at the event, Luke.

"We're at about 135 lbs right now," said Dr. Miller.

The Candy Buy Back Program is a nationwide effort in partnership with Operation Gratitude.
