The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation released more details in the 34-year-old cold case murder of Tracey Nielson, in the hopes that the new evidence might finally lead investigators to her killer.
OSBI agents now believe the killer may have taken a small keychain, approximately 1X4 inches, bearing the name “Tracey” as a souvenir from the murder.
“In our experience killers sometimes will take items of evidence or personal belongings from their victims. So we believe the killer very likely took the key ring and may still have it,” said Florence.
This is now the second piece of crucial evidence the OSBI has released to the public. Two clues agents hope will jog someone’s memory and bring new leads forward.
Neilson was just 21 years old when she was murdered by an attacker with a knife on Jan. 5, 1981. It was her birthday.
In January, OSBI agents revealed a cable service log found near Tracey Neilson's apartment during their investigation. On the day of her murder, Neilson was expecting work done at her Jamestown Square Apartment. Written in the corner of the log was a time stamp of 11:51 a.m. - moments before her death.
“At this point no records of that particular employee who used that ticket on that day has been located,” said Stan Florence, OSBI Director.
“With Tracey's death there is a huge emotional burden that's place on the family and extended family. Everyone her life touched,” said Tracey’s former husband, Dr. Jeffery Neilson.
Dr. Jeffery Neilson was only married to Tracey for five months. Their marriage cut short by her sudden and horrific death.
Over the years Dr. Neilson had his suspicions on what may have happened in apartment C 34 years ago. But still seeks the truth.
“I really think in all likelihood that this is a random event. The only thing that goes against that is the ravaged nature of the crime,” said Dr. Neilson.
The family has increased the reward to now $100,000 to anyone with information that leads to an arrest and conviction.
