The Norman North High School family is grieving the sudden loss of two of their own. Staff and faculty learned of two students' deaths Thursday night, days before school starts back.
The district released very little about the deaths and have not released their names, but they did have counselors on-site as football players practiced on Friday.
Coach Brent Barnes broke the news to his players Friday during football practice about the loss of one of their own.
“If we have the opportunity to tell our players or students or anything before they hear about it on social media or through other channels, it's always best if you can address it personally,” Barnes said.
He along with other staff at Norman North High School learned of the students' deaths Thursday night.
“At Norman North, it's probably one of the first times, especially to have two that close together,” Barnes said.
A spokesperson for Norman Public Schools explains the two student died in separate incidents. One student an incoming freshman, the other would have been a senior.
In a statement, the district said in part, "This is a huge loss for our district and our thoughts are with their families ... We will continue to provide support as we do any time we experience the loss of a student."
After learning the news Friday, Norman North players prayed for both families involved.
Classes resume at Norman North on August 20 and the principal said that more counselors will be brought in for the students as they continue to grieve the loss of these two Timberwolves.
