Starting Wednesday, some Oklahoma City police officers will have something new on their uniforms -- body cameras.
It's been in the works for a while now. Body cameras have become much of the national conversation for police accountability. Now every move of Oklahoma City police officers will be captured on video.
On Wednesday, the police department begins a 30-day body cam trial. Before the trial was approved, the city council had to adopt state and federal rules for the cameras, which they did on Tuesday.
As of right now the trial is only for one year and 100 cameras, but could eventually grow to include 700 cameras after the year.
Chief Bill Citty praised the use of the cameras because of the accountability factor. But the police union wants to be sure the cameras are only used for "critical incidents,” and not so a "supervisor can watch officers all day."
The union and department are still working on an agreement regarding those concerns. For now, the estimated cost of this initial wear test is $405,000.
