A neighbor called Rebecca Diaz's mother Sunday night, telling her an ambulance was outside her daughter's home and the husband was just arrested. At that moment, her mother knew what happened.
Rebecca and Humberto Diaz would have celebrated their one year anniversary next month. Rebecca's mother remembers happy times in the beginning of their relationship.
“He was a nice guy. A nice guy. Treated her good. You know he liked the kids, at that time,” said Rebecca’s mother.
Rebecca's mother said things began to change shortly after the two married.
Humberto, a sergeant in the Air Force, learned he would be deployed.
She said the alleged abuse intensified in the last several months, but believed her daughter stayed because she still loved her husband.
“She would talk to me about it and I would talk to her, but it wasn't until later that I was seeing it for myself,” said Rebecca’s mother.
Police told News 9 they've responded to several domestic calls at the couple's house on Lillian Lane.
An attorney representing the couple said DHS took custody of Rebecca's four young children in August after Humberto allegedly waved a gun and made threats.
Rebecca's mother spoke to her daughter hours before her death on Sunday, and said Rebecca made it clear she'd had enough.
“I was trying to calm her down because she called me and said 'I gotta leave',” said her mother.
Later that night neighbors heard arguing. Police said Humberto shot and killed his wife then called 911.

Rebecca's four children are in DHS custody while they work to figure out a permanent home.
