A 911 call turned personal for an Oklahoma City police sergeant late Sunday night.
Sgt. Wilner LaGuerre moved to America from Haiti 17 years ago.
He’s the only Haitian member of Oklahoma City’s 1,150 person police department.
Before coming to Oklahoma City, LaGuerre served two tours in Iraq in the United States Army.
But all he could think about Sunday night was helping 80-year-old Patricia Ross.
Ross called 911 dispatchers because she’d lost power in her home.
LaGuerre volunteered to go to the woman’s house.
He then made a trip to Walmart several miles away, and bought her a new phone, that didn’t need electricity to operate.
He also left her with candles and matches, and other items he bought for her, out of his own pocket.
LaGuerre said he felt a connection to Ross, because he said she reminded him of his own mother who passed away many years ago.
“You know, doing your job you see so much negativity. So, when you finally get that call, it is just worth it all,” he said Tuesday.
News 9 stopped by Ross’ house Tuesday, but no one answered her door.
