Fight In Chickasha Park Leads To Drugs, Guns, Arrests

A fight in the park landed a Chickasha grandpa behind bars.

It happened just before midnight on March 1 when a couple of teens met in a city park, and a neighbor heard the commotion and called 911.

Dispatch: “911. What’s the address of your emergency?”

Caller: “There are two fighting…and if they’re just playing it’s a little late at 11:42 at night.”

It turns out, these teens were not playing in the park, and neither were the two adults who showed up with them.

“The adults had apparently gone there to accompany some of the juveniles in an attempt to, they told us, make sure no one got jumped,” Assistant Chickasha Police Chief Shanon McClain said.

When police arrived there were several people gathered around the basketball court for a midnight scuffle, including several teens and two adults. One of them is the grandpa of one of the boys. Police were wearing body cameras that captured the entire ordeal including a short foot chase.

“Got two running.”

“Hey! Police! Come back!”

“Take your hands out of your pants. Let me see your hands.”

“Upon the officers searching the area to get a better grasp of what was going on, that’s when they located firearms on the ground, and they did also locate what appeared to be seven baggies of marijuana,” McClain said.

Officers found three guns. Two were handguns, and the other was an air gun. One of the guns belonged to 56-year-old Darin Clanton, the grandfather of one of the teens.

In addition to Clanton, another adult was arrested, 31-year-old Severiano Garcia- Barrientos and three juveniles.

“It’s possible these firearms could have been brought into the equation, and then things could have gotten very nasty,” McClain told News 9.

Clanton was arrested on several charges including having a firearm while committing a felony, possession of a controlled dangerous substance and bringing contraband into a jail.
