McClendon was considered a pioneer in the natural gas drilling industry. The boom made Chesapeake Energy billions of dollars before he was forced out in 2013 and went on to create American Energy Partners. He was also a part-owner of the Oklahoma City Thunder.
On Saturday, several people lined up along the Oklahoma River for a sunrise memorial in honor of McClendon, and to pay recognition for his impact on the organization, development of the river, and momentum of Oklahoma City.
Monday's memorial service is open to the public.
