Crews Respond To Tank Fire At Port Of Catoosa

Fire crews were called to a fire at the Port of Catoosa on Sunday morning. The Tulsa Fire Department confirms a tank was on fire inside the AZZ Galvanizing building. 

Winds were blowing from the northwest, carrying dark smoke. The fire was reported around 9:30 a.m., and crews appear to have had it under control pretty quickly.

About 40 Tulsa firefighters and Hazmat teams were at the scene. 

Security guards called in help when they saw something was burning.

 “I know they saw it; it must have been some smoke because they saw it from about a mile and a half away," said the Port’s Brad Banks.

AZZ Galvanizing creates zinc-iron alloys that protect the surface of prefabricated steel, according to their website. They use a "hot-dip" galvanizing process and have been in business for over 40 years, the company states.

"The fire was contained," David Yarbrough said "It is extinguished, and now everyone is in the mode of trying to determine what chemicals are involved and how to deal with those accordingly and safely. No firefighters to my knowledge were injured, and the building was unoccupied."

As a precaution, some firefighters had to decontaminate by taking off their bunker gear to get cleaned.

Sand and tarps also being used prevent water used to fight the fire from running off into storm drains.

The Department of Environmental Equality responded to the fire. TFD says the state fire marshal's office is investigating.
