After hours of questioning and going through more than 100 potential jurors, a jury of five women and nine men has finally been picked to hear the capital murder case of 49-year-old Albert Johnson.
For the past three days, both the attorneys and the judge have been asking potential jurors about where they stand on the death penalty and if they could sacrifice the time necessary for the trial, which is expected to last three weeks.
Johnson is accused of raping and beating his girlfriend and, her friend 24-year-old Rachel Rogers at their home in the Village. Rogers went to their home in The Village after getting a frantic call the night of June 13, 2014. Rogers later died as a result of the attack.
Johnson showed up for court Wednesday, wearing a sweater instead of a suit, and had nothing to say during the afternoon recess. He has been quietly listening to all of the questions being asked of the potential jurors, who once picked, will ultimately decide if he is guilty or not guilty of murder and 10 other felony counts including rape, assault and battery and kidnapping.
Johnson's girlfriend does plan to testify against him during the trial. Her young daughter was at home asleep during the time of the attack and court papers state he threatened to kill her too.
Opening statements are expected to begin Thursday morning.
