Stillwater Police are warning about a phone scam that's trying to trick people out of money.
Police said the scammers are spoofing the caller I.D. to make it look like the calls are coming from the Stillwater Police Department so victims will think the call is legit, but it’s not.
Police said the scammer acts like an officer investigating a case, make the victim think their social security number has been compromised and tell the victim their bank accounts are at risk if they don't take immediate action.
Police said the scammers are asking for payment through disposable money cards, like gift cards from retail stores.
They're also looking for personal information.
The police department doesn't call citizens asking for money. Police said that’s an instant red flag anytime you get a call from someone asking you to pay through disposable money cards.
They said, if in doubt, get the caller's name, hang up and call the agency back with a number you've personally found and verified.
