Oklahoma's largest school district and a handful of other metro districts are starting spring break early to prevent the spread of COVID-19, coronavirus.
Del City, Oklahoma City, Yukon, Western Heights and Harrah schools are closed in the metro area.
There is expected to be a conference call at 1 p.m. Friday with all school districts about COVID-19.
Oklahoma City Public Schools wont return to class until March 23, after spring break.
Mid-Del Public schools they will be closed Friday to do a deep clean of the district due to a coronavirus concern involving Jazz star Donovan Mitchell visiting Del City High School.
Edmond Public Schools did not canceled school Friday morning, however they did suspend all out of state school related sponsored trips through the beginning of April.
The State Department of Education has developed a frequently asked questioned page for districts to navigate potential scenarios. It includes what to do with students traveling over spring break. When to close a school if needed, and how to deal with paying employees during a school closure.
“We want to respect what it takes to keep our students and staff safe,” said Oklahoma State Superintendent Joy Hofmiester.
