Plumbing Remodel Sparks Fire At Midwest City Home

Midwest City firefighters had to contend with not only a large house fire, but also 102 degree temperatures. 

The fire was reported in the 3800 block of N. Bella Vista Drive near NE 10th Street and Midwest Boulevard. 

The only person in the home was a plumber who was working on brazing copper pipes with a torch when it caught fire. The plumber tried to put it out with a liquid but the liquid was flammable and exacerbated the fire, Midwest City fire Maj. David Richardson said.

Ironically, the home was being remodeled from a previous house fire in November 2018 and no one was living in the house at the time, Richardson said. 

A few houses north of the fire were evacuated by firefighters.

The fire spread from one home to another home. The elderly occupants in the home north of the original fire were helped by police and fire but needed no medical assistance, Richardson said.

The elderly occupants' home sustained smoke and fire damage. 

One firefighter was treated on the scene for possible heat exhaustion and another firefighter hurt his shoulder and went to the hospital to receive tests, Richardson said.

Firefighters from Del City and Tinker Air Force Base were assisting Midwest City firefighters.
