Heavy smoke filled the skies south of Guymon Tuesday after a large oil battery fire sparked. The Guymon Fire Department responded to the incident 10 miles east, then six miles south of Guymon. The oil site where the fire started belongs to MidCon Energy. Fire crews said flames were more than 20 feet high and could be seen a half of a mile away.

The fire apparently started while MidCon Energy workers were dealing with cold equipment due to the extreme temperatures, according to a press release. Once the fire started, it caught flammable products in a cooling tower on fire.

Firefighters said oil crews fled the area without any injuries. Fire crews said they allowed the fire to burn itself out and remain contained.

Estimated damage due to the fire was nearly $100,000.
