Metro teachers are making house calls before the start of classes on Tuesday.
“I think it's important to see where our students are coming from,” said Apollo Elementary 4th grade teacher Dawn Dilley. “You have to bridge the gap.”
Dilley thinks parents and kids appreciate the extra attention.
Teachers at Apollo, where a vast majority of students qualify for free and reduced meals, tried to visit some 446 homes before classes start. They talked with the parents and kids for a few minutes about the start of school before going to the next home.
“We want the best for their kids, just like they do,” said Apollo Elementary kindergarten teacher Brooke Chyzy.
“We were excited,” said parent Heather Purcifield, who says the school informed her about the visit, three days before they knocked on the door.
This if the first time Apollo has gone door to door. The school says they'll probably do the same next year.
Wiley Post Elementary teachers also went door to door before the start of classes on Tuesday.
