Gov. Fallin Helps Open New Genetics Lab At OU

Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin has helped open a new genetics laboratory on the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center campus.

The lab opened Thursday and will be used for genetic testing and research to advance the diagnosis and treatment of diseases in children. Researchers say the site is more than twice the size of the school's old genetics lab space and will allow researchers to expand their work.

The Clinical Genetics Laboratories in the OU College of Medicine opened in 1999 and performs chromosome analysis and DNA and metabolic testing, among other things.

The work focuses on blood and cancer disorders, but includes other common and rare conditions.

The labs are also involved in research that includes congenital heart defects.
