Woman Rescued From OKC House Fire Meets Hero

A mother of two who was pulled from her burning house by a complete stranger finally got to say "thank you" to her hero, face-to-face on Wednesday.

Daisy Pando says she could have died in the fire if it were not for Cameron Rushing, who risked his own life to pull her out of the burning house.

"I was coming down the street and I saw the smoke," recalled Rushing. "I could see all the smoke coming out of the roof and windows."

Rushing was on his way to a friend's house when we came across the burning house. He said he went to call 911, but quickly realized there was not enough time for that.

"I saw her hands in the window and I just got out of the truck and ran to the window."

Pando was trapped inside her house, trying to get out as smoke filled the house. The bathroom window was the only way Pando thought she might have a chance to get out. Rushing ran over to help her out.

"She just said she was stuck and couldn't get out and I said, you know, it'll be alright. ‘I'll get you out.' And I just reached in and it happened pretty quick, but I think she grabbed around my neck and I just pulled her out."

"He says that I would have made it out on my own, I don't think. And then I was panicked," said Pando. "There's nothing that I can ever do or will ever be able to do to repay him to explain how happy I am."

Rushing said he did not think of himself as a hero, but he said he was happy the mom of two made it out alive and well.

Pando has a 10-year-old daughter and a 5-year-old son. The fire destroyed most of the kids' toys and clothing, but Pando says they are slowly trying to put their lives back together.
