OKLAHOMA CITY -- Oklahoma City area residents can take advantage of an opportunity to clean out their medicine cabinets and bring expired drugs to Quail Springs Mall Saturday.

It just might save a life.

Old and unused prescription drugs will be accepted through 2 p.m. at the Oklahoma County Sheriff's Department office located in the mall during "Drug Take-back Day," October 29.

"Most people manage their prescriptions responsibly, but don't dispose remaining medications once they're finished taking them," said Rhonda Coleman-Jackson, manager and clinical nurse specialist of pain management services at Mercy Health Center.

"But leftover, expired prescription narcotics can be dangerous. They are a target for teenagers and people with addiction issues. Taking your excess prescriptions to be disposed could save a life."

Mercy is partnering with the sheriff's office and the Drug Enforcement Agency to accept leftover or expired medications. Anyone can bring their drugs to the professionals manning the Sheriff's office, and the medications will be disposed of responsibly.

No needles or syringes will be accepted.

This is the third national Drug Take-back Day. If you aren't in Oklahoma County, search for a collection site near you.
