"Protect and Serve" are just part of duties for law enforcement. But what about dunking and doing back flips? One Oklahoma County sheriff's deputy did just that and is gaining national attention after a viral video.
Deputy Erik Gransberg is not your typical guy in uniform. He works as a civil engineer by day and deputy by night. It was at an Edmond Memorial High School assembly this week that he stole the show in a dunk contest.
The students were stunned, but it was not the first time, this deputy was at center court.
He's been doing back flips since he was little guy growing up in Lubbock, Texas.
Then for five years, he was a mascot and cheerleader for the University of Oklahoma.
Gransberg worked as a cheer coach for OU for seven years and ran the mascot program.
He later served as mascot for different minor league teams in Oklahoma City, and for two years was part of the Thunder's acrobatic dunk team, the ‘Thunder Bolts.'
Gransberg started with the Oklahoma County Sheriff's Office as its mascot K9 Deputy Brisco, in honor of the K9, who died in the line of duty in 2007.
After going through the academy and becoming a deputy, Gransberg started work in the community service division.
Serving at a recent fundraising assembly, Gransberg was asked to do some of his old stunts.
“I'm like, ‘Are you sure you want me to do that? And he's like, ‘Yeah, I think we got this,'" Gransberg said.
So the deputy took to the trampoline to make an epic dunk, sending him flipping in mid-air. He threw the ball to a coach and student who both completed the two dunks.
"I was just so excited when it went in," he said.
He wasn't the only one, the students jumped to their feet, and the video has gone viral on social media.
"Bleacher Report ran it, SportsNation, and I guess there's a chance it might run on SportsCenter Top 10," Gransberg said.
Gransberg said he doesn't mind being back in the spotlight even if he has been dubbed the "The Dunking Deputy."
"You know I've been called a lot worse things, so I think being called the ‘Dunking Deputy' -- that's a title I'd like to keep."
Deputy Gransberg has been with the Sheriff's Office for more than five years.
At the assembly, where the deputy dunked, Edmond Memorial announced they had raised a record $701,334 for foster families during their annual swine week.
