NORMAN, Oklahoma -- The famous spiral roof on Norman's historic Bavinger House has partially collapsed.

The home's most striking feature is the spiral that stretches above the treetops.  SkyNews9 flew over the house Wednesday evening and saw that part of the spiral roof has fallen away from the building

The house was built more than 50 years ago by architect Bruce Goff.  The spiral wall is made of 200 tons of native stone, with rose rock and aqua-colored chunks of melted glass throughout.

On Tuesday, a News 9 crew went to Bavinger House to check on reports the house had been "destroyed."  Sources say Bob Bavinger, the son of the original owners of the house, had been threatening to tear down the home.

When the news crew arrived at the property, someone fired a gun at them and demanded to know who they were.  News 9 and Norman police were not able to determine who fired the shot.

It's not known what caused part of the spiral to fall.  A message on the Bavinger House's website read the property was closed because of severe storm damage.
