Wheelchair Bound Resident Gets Custom Home

EDMOND, Oklahoma -- The Central Oklahoma Habitat for Humanity builds lots of homes for low income metro families, but no home is like the one being built for a deserving Edmond resident.

"Today is a real special day for me," Ginny Moore said.

Saturday was a day Ginny Moore never thought she would see.

"You can go in and build a house, just a regular house but this is a different type of house," Moore said.

Everything in the house, from the floor up was custom built for Ginny Moore by an Edmond architect. She was born with Spina Bifida and has been in a wheelchair her entire life.

She's lived with many obstacles, including the rental home she lives in now.

"So many limitations, she couldn't use her stove, her oven, things were dangerous. The bathroom was not good, but for 18 and a half years she adapted to it and didn't complain, so if anyone deserves it it's her," Ginny's sister Michele Hughes

Central Oklahoma Habitat for Humanity, Edmond's Turning Point Ministries and the many volunteers agree.

If the weather cooperates, Turning Point's co-founder Bob Turner thinks the home will be move-in ready in less than six weeks.

"I've done dedications. I've done homeowners classes. I just finished the renovation station hours, so I've really been putting the hours in," Moore said.

And now she waits patiently for the day when she's handed the keys to her new, barrier-free life.

"It will be a great thing once I'm in it, ‘cause then I will know it is officially mine," Ginny Moore said.
