Man dies in high-speed chase

EDMOND, Okla. -- A man is dead after leading three police agencies in two counties on a high-speed chase.

The man died when he crashed his truck in Edmond.

Police say the pursuit began as a domestic dispute between the deceased suspect and his teenage girlfriend.

It ended when the man's own actions that cost him his life.

Authorities blocked off Boulevard Street north of Danforth Road in Edmond for several hours while investigating the chase that turned fatal.

The man behind the wheel was 24-year-old Robert Brooke.

"He was going so fast," spokesperson with the Edmond Police Department Glynda Chu said. "He probably wasn't familiar with this stretch of the road and he lost control of the pick-up and it did flip and he was ejected and was pronounced dead at the scene."

The incident started in Oklahoma City shortly after 3 a.m. when Brooke's 18-year-old girlfriend and mother of his 7-month-old child reported being assaulted by him. She then drove to Moore to stay with a relative.

"At this point she requested an extra patrol on the residence where she was staying," Todd Strickland with the Moore Police Department said. "Approximately 15 to 20 minutes later, our officers spotted a vehicle description that was given by the female about a block away from where she was staying."

Moore police got behind the vehicle at NE 27 St. and Eastern Ave. but Brooke sped off. He crossed over into Oklahoma County where Oklahoma City police and state troopers joined in the chase. Police say his speeds topped 100 mph.

"Oklahoma City did deploy stop sticks, in which after that it did take out two or more of the tires and the individual continued driving at a high rate of speed," Strickland said

Edmond police soon joined the chase.

Sixteen minutes after the chase started Brooke was going too fast to make a curve crashing the truck and killing him.

Police say they still don't know why Brooke ran.

Brooke had a previous arrest for drunk driving back in 2006.
