An Edmond man is behind bars after police said he attempted to kidnap a 10-year-old girl in The Village this week.
A nearby police department had already been investigating Wade Treloar Smalling, 42, after police said a jaw dropping amount of child pornography was found on his computer.
He was arrested by The Village police Wednesday.
Around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, The Village police were called to a neighborhood on reports of an attempted kidnapping.
Andrea Neely said her daughter was playing basketball in the family's driveway alone while her husband left for 10 minutes to deliver her food at work.
In that 10 minutes, Neely said Smalling parked his vehicle outside her home and walked up their driveway to her 10-year-old daughter.
According to court records, Smalling began touching the 10-year-old inappropriately, even threatening to harm the girl if she did not do what he wanted her to.
When the child tried to escape, police said, Smalling grabbed the girl tighter.
“He shouldn’t be breathing the same air,” said Andrea Neely, the victim’s mother. “To me that is to any pedophile, any rapist. They shouldn’t be breathing the same air as their victims.”
It wasn’t until her husband returned moments later that Neely said Smalling got back into his vehicle and fled the scene.
Both of Neely’s personal vehicles have dashcams and were able to snap a picture of a man police believe is Smalling and the vehicle involved in the attempted kidnapping.
“She’s a little shook up,” said Neely. “She’s actually holding it together better than I do.”
Oklahoma City police said they have been investigating Smalling since December 2018 when they received a tip that child pornography was possibly being shared over the internet.
Investigators said the tip from the website Tumblr, reported the discovery of a blog with the alleged content.
By January 2019, officers served a search warrant at Smalling’s home. On his computer, police said they found tens of thousands of photos and videos of child pornography.
“People are generally safe but there is no question that you just have to pay attention because you really never know who is watching you, who will assault you,” said Deputy Chief of Police at The Village Police Department.
Neely hopes this serves as a wake-up call to parents nationwide.
“Keep an eye on your kids,” said Neely. “Get them to carry pepper spray, get them to carry some kind of weapon on them and also use your voice, don’t be scared.”
Smalling is in the Oklahoma County Jail. He’s charged with distributing child pornography, indecent or lewd acts with child under 16 and kidnapping among other charges.
A judge set Smalling’s bond at more than $5 million.
