An Oklahoma City man on trial for murder went undetected for years. Police believe Robert Hashagen destroyed evidence at the 2013 murder scene of his 94-year-old neighbor Evelyn Goodall.
The Oklahoma County District Attorney’s cold case investigators testified that Hashagen's law enforcement background helped him cover his tracks. However, DNA and other evidence left at the victim's home tied him to the scene.
Investigators arrested Hashagen for first-degree murder in 2017.
Jurors sitting on his trial watched on Friday a two-hour interrogation video of Hashagen talking to investigators. He was given time to explain what happened to his 94-year-old neighbor but denied any involvement in the burglary of her home and the attack that killed her.
However, Hashagen gave investigators conflicting information from a recorded statement he gave them several years prior.
Investigators told him his alibi did not pan out. Hashagen told them he was at a friend's home the morning of the 2013 attack. That friend told investigators Hashagan was at his sister's home which was two houses down from Goodall's and that he actually had some of the woman's property.
Investigators also believe Hashagen destroyed evidence with bleach and by throwing water on the floors.
They did find his DNA on two items and confirmed Hashagen had access to the unique duct tape that was used to bind the victim's hands and feet.
Throughout the recorded interview, Hashagen never gave an explanation why his DNA was found in the elderly woman's home.
The trial will continue on Monday.
