Moore Fireman, Paramedic Nurse Revive Unconscious Man At Will Rogers World Airport

The right people were in the right place at the right time when a man was having a medical episode at the baggage claim area inside Will Rogers World Airport.

Moore Lieutenant firefighter Alex Meron and his charge nurse wife, Chelsee, had just landed back in Oklahoma City from a trip to Colorado around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Out of a crowd of people, the couple spotted a man who appeared to everyone else to be sleeping.

The couple approached the man, checked his pulse, and realized there was not one.

Alex is seen on airport security camera footage, released to News 9, immediately beginning CPR while Chelsee calmly walks to a nearby automated external defibrillator (AED) to bring back to the unconscious man.

The couple, within minutes, brought he man back to life while EMSA was in route.

“We emphasize a lot about situational awareness, being very cognizant about your surroundings,” said Ryan Marlar, Deputy Chief at the Moore Fire Department. “Sizing up the situation and then we apply it throughout an entire career. I believe that was what happened with Lieutenant Meron at the airport, he looked over at somebody that just didn’t seem normal.”

Ten AED’s are strategically placed around the airport and have been for over a decade. Officials said the investment is a no brainer.

“I just wouldn’t hesitate, If you see somebody who is lying on the ground or even in one of our chairs here,” said Stacey Hamm, spokeswoman at Will Rogers World Airport. “Don’t hesitate, run and get it whether you use it or not.”

It may be everyday work to first responders but to everyday citizens, it’s people like Meron and his wife who are the unsung heroes who walk among us.

“He is a leader in an organization, so I am not surprised,” said Marlar. “This is the kind of guy he is, and this is the kind of guys we have working at the fire department.”

EMSA said the man suffering a medical episode was taken to the hospital still breathing.

Meron’s mother told News 9 his father also saved someone’s life inside the Denver International Airport 26 years ago.
