USPS Unveils New Small Package Sorter That Will Help Expedite Package Processing Times

The United States Postal Service (USPS) held a ribbon cutting ceremony Tuesday to celebrate the launch of a new package sorter.

A Small Package Sorting System (SPSS) is now in operation at USPS Oklahoma City Processing & Distribution Center located at 4025 W. Reno Ave.

USPS said it will help expedite package processing time ahead of the holiday season.

“What this is going to allow us to do is process an additional 100,000 pieces for all of our customers on the western half of Oklahoma,” said Josh Hallman, Industrial Engineer at USPS.

Employees load bins of packages into the machine which then scans it. Within seconds, the sorting system has the package dropped into a bin which is sorted by zip code.

“We have over 350 zip codes that we process here currently,” said Hallman. “We do some of that manually and what this will allow us to do is basically do this twice as fast as what we currently do.”

Once a bin is full, an automated guided vehicle will pick it up and take packages where they need to go.

“Being able to have something that can give us that additional push as folks order more packages and as things comes through the postal service, it just allows us to be able to focus and really get this stuff moving on,” said Hallman.

The SPSS is one among 112 that will be installed at USPS locations nationwide.

USPS said the new system is crucial ahead of the holidays.

Despite cutting edge technology, planning ahead is more important than ever this season.

“We’re ready,” said Becky Hernandez, USPS spokesperson. “We want everyone to feel confident that we are going to get their gifts and all their cards and everything delivered on time.”

No jobs were lost with the addition of the new sorting system.
