The Tulsa Zoo is celebrating the arrival of a new guest after the birth of its first white rhino calf this weekend.

According to the Zoo, the male calf was born at 12:24 p.m. and weighs 127 pounds. Zookeepers say that he and his mother Sally are both healthy and doing okay.

“Our zookeepers and veterinary staff are monitoring both Sally and her calf closely. We’re happy to report both animals are doing very well,” said Zoological Curator of Mammals Jordan Piha. “Sally is an experienced, attentive mother, so we’re looking forward to witnessing the calf grow and thrive here.”

Experts with the Tulsa Zoo noted the importance of breeding programs for the White Rhinoceros. With fewer than 20,000 left in the wild, the species is currently classified as Near Threatened.
