A Tulsa County man is trying to clear his name and his record after someone else used the victim's name during an arrest.

The victim ended up being charged with the crimes but they were later dismissed when the district attorney found out the truth. Steven Alford says this isn't fair and he shouldn't have to pay to get something off his record that he didn't even do.

Steven Alford says he was in shock when his friends started messaging him, after hearing his name on the news about an arrest, but it wasn't Steven's picture, it was someone Steven had been friends with ten years ago.

"They sent me a picture of the guy that it was, it wasn't me obviously, it had his mug shot and then my name under it," he said.

He says even though the officers caught the mistake while booking the other man into jail, Steven was still charged with second-degree burglary and drug possession.

He says the charges have been dismissed, but they are still on his record and online.

He says the district attorney's office says the only way to get the case removed is to get a lawyer to fight to get it expunged.

"Now, here I am having to deal with all this court stuff, court cost, lawyer fees, and whatnot for something that I didn't even do," he said.

He says getting a lawyer would cost him at least $700, and he doesn't have that money.

He says he's also having to search for a new job but is worried no one is going to believe him when they do a background check and it shows he has a record.

"Because I've got to explain, hey this was dismissed because it wasn't really me, I swear to God it wasn't me," he said.

He says he feels anxious, and he just wants this to get fixed.

"I literally have no idea what to do at this point, my whole life feels ruined at this point because I'm actually a decent human being I would never do something like that and now it looks like I did it," he said.

He says, for now, he can't afford an attorney and is hoping there is some other way to get the charges off his record.
