A semi carrying cattle crashed early Friday morning when the driver fell asleep at the wheel and collided with the center cable barrier, according to an Oklahoma Highway Patrol spokesman.
The driver was transported by medical helicopter to OU Medical Center.
I-40 will continue to be closed until the surviving cattle are captured.
I-40 is closed in both directions because of a semi crash just west of El Reno, OHP reports.
Some cattle were killed in the accident but the number of how many is not known.
There were other cattle who were gravely injured and put down at the scene, OHP said.
A second accident, which occurred just after 7 a.m. Friday near U.S. Highway 81, also shut down parts of I-40 in El Reno. At least one person was killed in the second accident.
As of 9:50 a.m. Friday, both the eastbound and westbound lanes of I-40 have been reopened following both accidents.
This is a developing story.
