Early this morning, a few scattered showers and storms will persist across central Kansas and across southeastern Missouri into north Central Arkansas. This activity will remain too far to impact our immediate vicinity, but a few clouds will move from Western Arkansas into northeastern Oklahoma during the morning and midday hours.

timeline today 9-16-24

Locations near and west of the metro should have mostly sunshine. The remnants of Francine continue to linger across the far southeastern U.S., while a midlevel ridge is predicted to be to the north of this region. This blocking pattern over the eastern third of the country is set to persist for the next several days as a significant trough develops across the Western United States.

The disturbance rotating around the base of this trough may brush far northwestern Oklahoma on Wednesday night into early Thursday, but most showers or storm activity will likely stay northwest of our area. We will include a low-end probability for a few nearing through early Thursday morning.

Later in the week, a stronger segment of the trough will approach, bringing a chance of scattered showers and storms for this weekend. Low-level moisture will increase ahead of this system, supporting the potential for increasing heat stress with heat index values nearing 100 on Thursday and Friday.

weekend 9-16-24

The upper-level airflow is expected to remain favorable for additional showers and storm chances into the following week.

Monday morning lows in the mid to upper 60s will lead to daytime highs in the upper 80s, approaching 90, for both today and tomorrow from Tulsa to the west.

dma highs north 9-16-24

Some clouds across the eastern third of the region will keep highs in the lower to mid-80s in these areas.

dma highs south

Temperatures are expected to rise by midweek, with morning lows in the 70s and highs reaching the mid-90s on Thursday and Friday.

A few showers or storms will be near the area Wednesday night into early Thursday. But the weekend will present a better opportunity for showers and storms in northern Oklahoma compared to the previous systems.
