Oklahomans woke up to dense fog and chilly temperatures this morning, but warmer conditions for the next couple of days are on the way before a significant cooldown arrives just in time for the New Year.
Temperatures started in the 30s and 40s across the state, with light winds under 5 mph allowing dense fog to settle in, particularly in eastern Oklahoma. Many areas reported visibility near zero miles. Fortunately, the fog is expected to dissipate as sunshine breaks through, leading to afternoon highs reaching the 60s in Oklahoma City and across much of the state.
Monday will bring even warmer weather, with highs climbing into the 60s and 70s, but stronger winds of 15-25 mph, with gusts up to 40 mph in western Oklahoma, will accompany the unseasonably mild temperatures.
By New Year’s Eve, a cold front will sweep through the state, dropping highs into the 40s and lows into the 30s. The chillier weather is expected to stick around for New Year’s Day, with temperatures remaining near seasonal averages in the 40s and low 50s.
Looking further ahead, there is potential for a major storm system at the end of next week. This system could bring a blast of Arctic air to Oklahoma, making temperatures feel more like winter. While it remains uncertain whether this system will fully materialize, colder air is overdue for the region.
For now, Oklahomans can enjoy a brief respite from the cold with mild and sunny conditions over the next two days.
Travelers heading east of the Mississippi should be aware of a large storm system that could cause flight delays today, although airports are not currently reporting major disruptions.
