Oklahoma City leaders are considering giving residents the chance to double the hotel tax for the city. The council heard from citizens Tuesday, and most seem to support the proposition.

The proposition would raise the hotel tax from 5.5 percent to 9.25 percent, the first increase since 2004. The hotel tax is applied to overnight hotel or home-share property charges.

The city estimates the change would bring in an additional $11 million to the city. Those funds would go toward promoting tourism and city attractions.

The tax would be in addition to city and state sales tax, bringing the total to nearly 18 percent.

Councilmembers are expected to vote on the proposal next Tuesday.

If approved, it would go before voters on August 27th.
