OKLAHOMA CITY - An Oklahoma City police officer has shot and killed a man outside a medical facility in northwest Oklahoma City.
Police said 23-year-old Patrick Donovan Trevino was shot shortly after 8 a.m. Monday by one of two officers responding to reports of a fight inside Human Performance Center.
Police say one officer is a training officer and the other a recruit.
According to police witnesses reported Trevino fought with both officers and tried to take their weapons. The fight reportedly went from inside the facility into the parking lot area where Trevino reportedly grabbed the recruit's gun and the training officer opened fire - killing Trevino at the scene.
Those who knew 23-year old Patrick Trevino said he was in the process of seeking help for his drug addiction. Just days ago, he made an appeal.
"He went to my daughter and said 'Please help me. I want to be helped. I want to come clean," said Amanda Ortiz.
Amanda Ortiz's daughter was Patrick's girlfriend. His friends called him by his middle name, Donovan. Ortiz said he came to the physical therapy center out of desperation to get help for his illness. But that is where his life came to an end.
"She said ‘Donovon's dead.' I said 'Who fought him?' and she said 'Nobody momma. He just was going crazy and the police shot him in the head,'" Ortiz said.
It's not clear if Trevino was under the influence of drugs at the time of the altercation. His girlfriend said he was not.
"She said he was acting normal and he wasn't on nothing," Ortiz said.
Trevino had been in trouble with the law before. He was convicted five years ago on a domestic violence complaint. His death is now the focus of an internal police investigation.
Authorities have not released the name of the officers involved in the shooting. The training officer has been placed on routine administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
