A heartbroken son is speaking out for the first time after his father is gunned down while protecting his own daughter.

William "Billy" Ross was killed Sunday. The search for the gunman continues.

According to family members, the suspect was arguing with the victim's daughter. William Ross stepped in and was shot.

“My dad's first instinct; help your kid,” said Trey Ross.

15-year-old Trey Ross was enjoying the weekend when he got a hysterical call from his sister.

“Crying, screaming, dad was laying on the ground,” said Ross.

According to Layce McMullen her brother-in-law Billy was a gentle giant who was simply trying to protect his daughter from her ex-boyfriend.

“He’s not one to pull out guns and do all that, he just wanted the guy to get off the property,” said McMullen.

“My sister’s baby daddy came up there trying to take the kids, he tried to hit my sister,” said Ross.

McMullen said the argument between the two turned physical and the suspect Quantrell Young pulled a gun -- shooting Ross several times in front of his 1-year-old daughter.

“You went to see your daughter and now you’ll never see her again, and you shot your grandpa right in front of her,” said McMullen.

Ross leaves behind five children.

“I called him like five times trying to tell myself it’s not true, that it’s just a dream, calling him hoping he would answer, to hear his voice, to hug him one more time,” said Ross.

His son Trey said he now can only cling to memories.
