A Chickasha man is behind bars at the Grady County jail after investigators said he shot his wife and attempted to stab himself after doing so.

The incident happened around 1:30 a.m. on Christmas Eve in the 1400 block of South 5th Street in Chickasha.

Chickasha police arrested Oseas Sanchez-Orta, 70.

The shooting suspect’s 14-year-old son called 911 after witnessing his father shoot his mother.

According to court records, Sanchez-Orta was intoxicated and arguing with his wife when he fired two rounds that hit her.

Sanchez-Orta’s son fought his father for the gun, according to court documents. While doing so, another bullet was fired into the family couch.

Sanchez-Orta’s son was able to successfully take the gun from his father. But when he did, investigators said Sanchez-Ortra then went into the kitchen, got a knife, and attempted to stab himself in front of his son.

Sanchez-Orta’s son then attempted to take the knife away from his father.

Chickasha police arrived to the home while that scuffle was underway, Sanchez-Orta was then taken into police custody.

“Right now, Oseas is being held at the Grady County Jail,” said Brook Arbeitman, spokeswoman for the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigations. “He has a $1 million bond and is facing a charge of shooting with intent to kill which is a felony.”

If Sanchez-Orta bonds out of jail, he has been ordered to stay away from family.

“Sadly, many domestic violence cases are committed with a gun and lead to murder,” said Arbeitman. “In this case, Anna (Sanchez-Orta’s wife) is lucky she has her life. Hopefully justice will be served.”

It is unclear if Child Protective Services has gotten involved regarding Sanchez-Orta’s son.

Chickasha police told News 9 the OSBI is handling the case due to the department being short staffed.
