A woman has been arrested, accused of driving under the influence in a collision involving an Oklahoma Highway Patrol trooper Friday morning.

Authorities said 42-year-old Sarah Lee Pedro crashed into OHP Trooper Densil Johnson around 6:30 a.m. near Interstate 40 eastbound and Sara Road.

OHP said Johnson had his lights on doing traffic control while a motorist was changing a tire and working on his vehicle on the side of the road when the crash happened.

“As he was sitting there, another vehicle, a pickup truck, departed the roadway to the right and struck trooper Johnson’s patrol car at highway speeds,” OHP Trooper Eric Foster said. “We are very grateful that it wasn’t very serious or even fatal for everyone involved.

Both Johnson and Pedro were hospitalized. Johnson was released, while Pedro was arrested and booked in at the Canadian County jail.

Investigators, in preliminary reports, found little signs Pedro tried to slow down.

“Often times we see traffic moving over but for some reason, probably due to impairment, this lady left the roadway to the right instead of moving left,” Foster said.

While a very close call, members of law enforcement will tell you others aren’t so lucky.

“There are families that go through this every day that don’t get to see their loved ones because someone made a choice to drive intoxicated,” Foster said. “So, this is a reminder not to drive intoxicated, not to drive distracted, move over when you see those emergency vehicles.”

Pedro has been arrested for transporting an open container and driving under the influence. Court records show she has a history of driving on a suspended license.
