Ten students finished a new program at OSU-OKC called the Center for Social Innovation on Friday, marking the first year of the transformative class.

The program focuses on individuals who are in or recently completed rehabilitation or diversion programs. Each student has a history of hardship, admits to previous mistakes and strives to find a second chance at life.

“This was just a golden opportunity that I couldn’t pass up,” said Lakota Thompson.

At the beginning of the year, Thompson was in a drug treatment program. On Friday, she celebrated earning her associates degree.

“I did a lot of young and dumb things. And I don’t’ think it should define who I am as a person and this program kind of reinvigorated that for all of us, you know. We’re not our mistakes,” said Thompson.

Michelle Tubby said she’s battled with addiction her whole life.

“My mom started getting me high at 3 years old, so I didn’t know anything different.”

The CFSI program offered the class a network of support as well as opportunities to continue their education.

During the year, Tubby interned with the Mental Health Association of Oklahoma and the Homeless Alliance in Oklahoma City.

“Each and every one of these people have helped me through my recovery to stay sober, through my hardships, through the good times, bad times. We’ve all been there for each other,” said Tubby.

Michael Norris graduated at 37 years old and said he laid the groundwork to pursue a career in addiction counseling.

“I’ve been an addict for 21 years and I really want to give back and maybe try to help some people not go down some of the paths that I went,” he said.

The donor-funded program is free for students. The school is accepting applicants for the next academic year, which begins in August.
