Police are investigating a family dispute that led to a deadly shooting on Saturday in southeast Oklahoma City.
Police arrested Kyle Westfall, 38, in connection with the shooting death of 61-year-old Richard Davis.
Westfall’s mother, Kathy Westfall, told News 9 the shooting has been a devastating loss. Not only did she lose her husband, but her son is in the Oklahoma County Detention Center on a first-degree murder complaint.
A tragic ending to a family fight at their home near SE 44th and Durland Avenue.
The homeowner told News 9 her husband was drunk and punching her daughter. The woman said Davis' violent behavior was nothing new to them. She said she called her son to help out and said Davis went after him with a large flashlight.
Several neighbors said they heard two gunshots.
“We just heard the shooting and never thought it was him who died that night,” said Iris, a neighbor.
Police were called to the home Saturday night to check out a domestic disturbance.
“When officers arrived, they located our victim in the backyard deceased from a gunshot wound,” said Sgt. Dillon Quirk, Oklahoma City Police Department.
Neighbors said they were in shock when they heard Davis died, allegedly at the hands of his stepson. They said the family was quiet and they never suspected there were problems behind closed doors.
“We always see him sitting down on the porch and we never thought it would happen like that,” said Iris.
Police said this is still an open investigation. The Oklahoma County district attorney will decide if Westfall will be charged.
