There’s some scary things happening in downtown Edmond, and it’s all attributed to the return of the scarecrows.
It all started four years ago. Downtown Edmond businesses are given a stake and the head to come up with their own unique scarecrow.
“We started it to bring the community to downtown Edmond, and now it’s kind of like become a tradition and something that everybody looks forward to,” said Stephanie Carel, with the Edmond Downtown Business Association.
What was started to bring guest to the area has now turned into a fierce competition that businesses start planning for in the summer.
At last count there are at least forty scarecrows, some scary and some not so scary. Most reflecting the business that created them.
“They kind of dot the streets all around downtown Edmond. So, it’s a great way for you and your family and friends to visit Edmond and be entertained this Halloween season,” said Jennifer Seaton director of Visit Edmond Tourism.
The staff at Edmond Antiques, call their scarecrow, “Mid Summer’s Nightmare.”
“She’s a scary little thing but is really awesome. She has the little pumpkins for a mouth, and googly little eyeballs, we’ve already had so many children come up and want to have their picture taken with her,” said B. J. Robinson with Edmond Antiques.
And while the business owners get into the competition, they also acknowledge that it’s good for business.
“People and kids and families are just having a great time. You see a lot of selfies, you see a lot of conversations going on with all these scarecrows, said Seaton.
“It’s become a family affair to come to downtown Edmond and walk several blocks with their kids and see all the fun scarecrows down here,” said Robinson.
The scarecrows will be out until October 31. You can vote for your favorite on downtown Edmond’s Facebook page.
