The Historic Capitol Hill area in Oklahoma City is getting a big renovation.

The city announced plans to fund a multicultural plaza.

Leaders told News 9 this project has really been a labor of love. Residents in the area and community members took part in every meeting and planning phase.

For the historic Capitol Hill, music, dancing and culture aren’t just for fiestas, it’s a way of life and a symbol of community.

“It’s just heartwarming to see how our community is growing, I love to see the diversity of it. Bringing people here but then also now having that attention in the district,” Miriam Campos, the Calle Dos Cinco Board Chair, said.

These traditions are finding their way into the next big project on Southwest 25th Street.

“The community has spoken and said, ‘we want color, we want culture, but we want history,’ all things that Capitol Hill is to all people,” Campos said.

Oklahoma City unveiled plans for a new multicultural plaza in the heart of Historic Capitol Hill.

“We are so excited about this plaza, it is something that our community has been asking for, our district has been asking for and finally our city is giving us through the SNI program, so we are really excited,” she said.

The Strong Neighborhoods Initiative works with residents to revitalize parts of the city. The multicultural plaza is getting $2 million in funding.

“We want it to be a space that welcomes people whether you can go back to your country or not, that you feel this is your home,” Campos said.

She said not only is this a good for the district, but it will also increase the property value in the area.

“We hope that this becomes a place that people want to live, want to purchase, want to grow. For those that already live in this district, it will give them a reason to stay and to continue to enhance their properties,” the board chair said.

Construction is expected to begin in mid-2023.
