A security guard who was recently shot at a downtown Taco Bell is speaking out Saturday night. Still recovering from his wounds, Ado Autman details the moments a man approached him, took his gun, and shot him.

For Autman, March 5th is the night the shooter took more than his gun.

“It's a confidence thing with me right now,” Autman said.

His confidence is shaken even though he says he did everything he could to prevent the shooting.

“I'm slowly getting over it, understanding what happened,” he said.

A field supervisor, Autman said he was checking in on one of his security guards at the Taco Bell located near Classen Boulevard and Sheridan Avenue. That’s when he noticed two women loitering, trying to charge their phones.

“They weren't paying, they weren’t trying to order any food,” he remembers. “They were just trying to use a free outlet.”

Once he got them to the parking lot, he said that’s when one woman got combative.

“Obviously I’m fighting her back and out of nowhere a guy comes running through the parking lot,” he said.

That man was 36-year-old Shamond Ellis. Police say he punched Autman and the two fought. During the scuffle, Ellis grabbed Autman’s duty gun, shooting him twice in the leg.

“We just fought all the way to the end for the gun and he got a hold of it and that's how it went, nobody just walked up to me and just took my gun out of my holster and shot me,” he said.

Autman’s wounds are slowly healing, he’s walking now, but slowly. However, mentally, the shooting is taking its toll.

“I have nightmares, wake up in the middle of the night and I picture that guy,” said Autman.

Ellis was arrested on complaints of assault and battery with a deadly weapon.

“Somebody had to beat somebody that night and I guess I was the receiver,” he said. “I'll just have to accept that.”

Autman is staying positive and says he will regain his mobility; the doctors told him six weeks. However, Autman says it may be even longer before he’s ready to go back to work.
