Investigators are now reporting that it appeared to be a random shooting aimed at an innocent driver and his female passenger.

The shooting was first reported as a possible road rage incident, but police said on Wednesday the shooter was standing in the middle of the roadway when the victim’s car passed him.

Gunshots rang out in a neighborhood near Northwest 15th Street and May Avenue.

“So, me and my wife were standing outside the restaurant when we heard nine shots go off,” Jordan Smith, who heard the gunshots, said.

Another man also heard nine gunshots.

“I thought I heard couple screams after the shots,” John Bashaw, a witness, said.

Police responded to the area and found a man shot in both legs and a woman shot in the back of the head. The car they were in had visible gunshot holes.

During the investigation, police learned this was not road rage or a drive-by shooting.

“As this couple, a male and female were driving down the road they saw a man standing just right in the middle of the roadway,” Msgt. Gary Knight with the Oklahoma City Police Department said. “They slowed down to go around him. They said he looked startled all of the sudden and apparently pulled out a gun and began shooting at their car.”

Witnesses told police that the suspect walked to a red car with another person inside and drove away. Investigators have few clues as to what prompted the random gunfire.

“It is totally unclear as to what made him do this,” Knight said.

Police said the victims were expected to survive their injuries and they want to get the shooter off the streets before he harms someone else.

“We’re still working on trying to get him identified,” Knight said.

Contact the Crime Stoppers tip line at 405-235-7300 if you witnessed the red car that fled the scene or have information about the suspects identity.
