Three seniors from Little Axe High School graduated following a crash on Friday. The three were headed to graduation practice when the truck they were in hydroplaned off the road and into a tree.
“It was really scary, it all happened so fast,” said Landon Wilson, a recent graduate from Little Axe High School.
Wilson walked across the stage during Friday night’s graduation ceremony while his two best friends, Silas Mason and David Ramos were in the hospital. But all three got their diplomas.
“It shouldn't have happened, we should have all been there,” he said. “I knew it wasn't my fault, I knew it was an accident.”
Wilson was driving to graduation practice on Friday when he hit a patch of running water.
“I lost control and I just kind of held on and I kept the wheel straight and I really didn't know what to do,” he said.
He hydroplaned and hit a tree off Hardesty Road in Bethel Acres. Landon was the only one wearing his seat belt. All three went to the hospital, Silas with a collapsed lung and David with multiple injuries including broken bones.
“It was scary,” remembers Silas Mason who was released from the hospital on Sunday. “I didn't know what to do, in the moment, I thought both of my buddies just died on me.”
Landon was treated and released with a concussion and attended graduation. David and Silas spent graduation night in the hospital.
“I didn't want to be there without them, I wanted to be with them,” Wilson said.
Instead, Landon said he attended the graduation ceremony for them.
“I knew I wasn't just walking for myself, I was walking for myself, Silas, and David.
Mason said he watched the graduation ceremony online from his hospital bed.
“I saw Landon walk across the stage and I knew me, and David weren’t there but we were there,” Mason said.
And miraculously all three will be together again.
“The Lord was with us, he had his hand in there,” Wilson said. “I don't know what I would have done if I lost either of them.”
Wilson said the crash opened his eyes and has this message.
“Before you leave anywhere make sure you wear your seatbelt for one and make sure you tell your loved ones you love them,” he said.
Ramos is still at OU Medical Center but is expected to recover.
