The News 9 team is learning the art of catching frogs, or gigging, and the best way to prepare frog legs.
But what exactly is gigging? A gig refers refer to any long pole which has been tipped with a multi-pronged spear, although according to the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation, the capture of frogs can be done with any method ranging from hook and line, gig, spear, bow and arrow or other methods, with the exception of firearms.
News 9's Lacie Lowry and Meteorologist Lacey Swope recently went on such an exhibition to hunt for bullfrogs.
"You can find bullfrogs in most ponds Oklahoma," Lacie Lowry said. "The key is, bullfrogs thrive in ponds without largemouth bass."
Bullfrogs are an attractive prey for large fish, such as bass, and therefore may be harder to find in areas dominated by such fish.
However, catching the frogs is only half the battle. Preparing and cooking them is another ordeal.
A delicacy in Oklahoma, frog legs are a popular dish, particularly when fried.
Lacey Swope's fried frog leg recipe involves egg, buttermilk, a generous amount of salt and pepper, cornmeal, and any other seasonings you may enjoy, such as Cajun seasoning.
The frog legs should fry for around 3-4 minutes, or until they reach 145 degrees.
Lacie Lowry said the fried frog legs had "exactly" the same texture as chicken wings.
Lacie and Lacey will go deeper into frog gigging as part of Oklahoma's Own Fall Getaways special series.
The series premieres at 8 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 11.
