Each year, Oklahoma veterans, active military members and first responders remember 9/11 on the ice. The Oklahoma Warriors Veteran Hockey Association held a memorial game to also bring attention to veteran suicide.

The program gives players a chance to be part of a team by playing recreational ice hockey. The ice hockey team is made up of players with all different skill levels, but all have one thing in common.

“The military is always a part us and this team helps keep us together,” said player Billy Hung.

The association was set up to combat veteran suicide and help members settle back into civilian life.

“In the military we're all part of a unit and we're all stuck together in a close environment. When you leave and join the civilian world a lot of times, you’re alone, so this is a good way to get back to a team mindset,” Hung said.

“I’ve seen individuals grow on and off of the ice whether it be promotions at work, lifestyle changes,” said Kyle Rausch, Oklahoma Warriors Veterans Hockey Association President.

Each year the team plays a 9/11 memorial game against local first responders.

“We do it to remember all of the first responders that ran into harm's way, military that ran into harm's way and to honor the civilians who lost their lives,” Rausch.

During the game, the group also honored Sgt. Morgan Reynolds, an Oklahoma City police officer who survived a brutal beating while on the job.

“Having watched what Sgt. Reynolds went through to get back on her feet and the courage and commitment that she has to protecting us and the community the way we did in the military overseas,” said Rausch. “She's like all of us, she's a fighter.”

Like the men and women who serve to protect our communities.

“I really enjoy seeing our veterans get on the ice and anytime we can get them on the ice it's a win,” Rausch added.

The team will head to Colorado in October for the Warriors Classic.
