A truck driver is shot and killed during a traffic stop along the Turner Turnpike near Stroud. According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, around 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, an OHP trooper pulled over a truck driver in the eastbound lanes of the turnpike at mile marker 183.
“The reason for the traffic stop is unknown right now,” said Trooper Brack Miller with the OHP. “A short while later the call over the radio went out as shots fired, some sort of altercation happened prior to this.”
Miller said the trooper shot and killed the truck driver inside the cab of the truck. It’s unclear if the driver was armed. His name isn’t being released until the family is notified. The truck he was driving was marked K&F Trucking, a company out of Oxford, North Carolina. News 9 was not able to reach the company for comment.
OHP’s investigative team collected evidence for hours on Wednesday.
“They're out there with metal detectors collecting casings,” Trooper Miller said. “They have lots of manpower, lots of equipment, no stone goes unturned whenever they're processing scenes, fingerprints, photographs, drone footage overhead.”
Max Cook, the district attorney for Creek and Okfuskee Counties, was on scene to assist.
“Whenever there's an unintended death, the DA or the medical examiner has to be present before the body can be moved,” said Max Cook, DA for Creek and Okfuskee Counties. “It's certainly unusual and sad to see it happen. We'll get the investigation report on it and get it figured out.”
The trooper was not hurt in the shooting. OHP said he will be placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
