A Warr Acres woman lost her mother after a car accident on the day of her baby shower.
Cyndi White says her mother, 54-year-old Helen Thompson, was heading home from the event last month when she got into a single-car accident near Del City.
Now, White needs help to lay her mother to rest.
“She was the sweetest woman that I have ever known,” said White.
White said what she considered to be one of the best days of her life turned into the worst day. She was expecting her second child. On April 20, she celebrated with friends and family at her baby shower, and her mother was right there by her side.
“My mom was really looking forward to meeting her little granddaughter,” White said.
She never had the chance, White said on the way home from the shower, her mom died in a car accident.
“It just happened so fast, I just don't understand,” she said.
Del City Police said it happened at SE 15th Street and S Bryant, where she lost control, veered off the road, and struck a tree.
“I miss her so much,” she said. “I talked to her every day.”
Thompson died along with two of her neighbor’s young children. Thompson’s 9-year-old grandson received minor injuries while her 13-year-old niece is still in critical condition with head trauma. She was the children’s guardian.
“I just hate this happened, I didn't get enough time with her,” White said.
The stress and high blood pressure forced White to have her daughter three weeks early, but she says she’s healthy.
“She's so pretty, and she's such a sweet little baby,” White said of her newborn daughter. “She just reminds me of my mother a lot, she kind of looks like her too. Even looking at her, I cry because my mother has been waiting to meet this little baby. She came four days after my mother passed away; it's just sad.”
Now, White will care for the children left behind but needs help paying for her mother's funeral.
“I'm not worried about the children; they're going to be taken care of. They're well taken care of,” White said. “I just need help laying my mother to rest; that's all I’m asking for.”
