The Yukon City Council voted to fire the city manager "without cause" in a meeting on Wednesday.

In a three-to-two vote, the council decided to fire Tammy Kretchmar, effective immediately, after nearly 30 years with the City of Yukon and within a year of winning Oklahoma's City Manager of the Year award.

Mayor Brian Pillmore, sworn in earlier in the day, said the city will pay Kretchmar an approximately $175,000 severance package.

City Councilwoman Shelli Selby says the firing opens the city up to a lawsuit.

"When you fire a city manager without cause, if you had cause, that’s one thing, but who would come to work for a council that will fire with somebody without cause. There’s cause. Called personal agenda," Selby said.

The mayor says in a statement he’s unable to give a reason for the firing due to the confidential nature of the personnel decision:

"I am unable to discuss the detailed reasons for the council’s decision due to the confidential nature of this personnel matter. We are grateful for Ms. Kretchmar’s years of service to Yukon and wish her the best in her future endeavors.
As Mayor, my commitment to enhancing the City of Yukon remains unwavering, ensuring that every decision aligns with the community's best interests.  Change brings both challenges and opportunities for growth. Our focus now is to ensure a smooth transition as we continue to elevate Yukon’s best."
