After stalling last year, Edmond's Uncommon Ground Sculpture Park project is back on track. The city will invest up to $15 million for the property.

The French Family Charitable Foundation will develop 62 acres to showcase public art. The people behind this project say they want to improve Edmond’s quality of life. They said these spaces highlight the history and love they have for their city.

To build something special, visionaries and cities must compromise to execute a plan. Edmond attorney Todd McKinnis represents the developers who want to turn the Edmond property on the corner of 2nd Street and Coltrane Road into the Uncommon Ground Sculpture Park.

“It used to be known as the Johnson Horse Farm when I was growing up here,” McKinnis said.

In January, the city installed the “Valley of the Horse” by artist Paul Moore – one of more than 40 sculptures that will soon watch over the park.

“Edmond has a wonderful history of wonderful parks and ambitious parks,” McKinnis said.

The project stalled last year due to disagreements on cost and the work down the road.

“Last May, they just got to an impasse,” McKinnis said. “There was frustration I think on all sides.”

On Tuesday, Edmond City Council members lit the green light toward construction of the project.

“Parks add to a quality of life that is really not replaceable any other way,” McKinnis said.

City leaders found common ground to create a path toward an uncommon future.

“It’s just gonna be a significant, multigenerational impact for the city of Edmond,” McKinnis said.

The city must finalize how the park will be maintained once it’s open. That is expected to happen at the city council meeting on June 10. The project is expected to be finished in about two and a half years.
