Investigators say the murder-suicide happened just after 8 a.m. Monday morning outside of a home in the 3400 block of Wildwood Road, in northern Edmond.

The victim was identified by police as Catalina Jimenez, 43, and the suspect was identified as Jose Manuel Alaniz, 51.

The sheriff's office says Jimenez was at the home picking up a coworker when Alaniz pulled up behind them, got out, and fired two shots into the driver’s side, hitting and killing Jimenez.

Investigators say Alaniz walked around to the passenger’s side where the coworker was sitting.

“The passenger was able to get out at that point in time,” said Logan County Sheriff Damon Devereaux.

Devereaux said after the woman escaped, the man died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The coworker was taken to the hospital as a precaution.

“I've never been in a situation like that, but I can't imagine the terror she would be feeling of being involved that close to something like that,” Devereaux said. “I'm sure she felt like her life was about to end.”

According to the Sheriff’s Office, the couple had a history of domestic-related calls, and Alaniz had been arrested in the past.

Court documents show he was charged with two counts of domestic abuse by strangulation on his wife in November of 2023.

Jimenez had a protective order in place against Alaniz. She filed it right after this incident, and it was still in effect at the time of her murder.

The couple’s young child was inside the home at the time of the shooting, according to investigators, but wasn’t hurt.

The Sheriff’s Office requested the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation to assist in the crime scene investigation.
